LESSON 1 · The Money Playbook

The Poverty Premium

Being broke is expensive. People without savings pay hundreds — sometimes thousands — of dollars more per year for the same goods and services as wealthier neighbors. It shows up as check-cashing fees, payday loans, and not being able to buy in bulk. Small amounts compound into large sums once the habit becomes automatic.

This isn't a character flaw — it's a structural trap. When you can't afford to buy in bulk or pay for a warehouse-club membership up front, you pay more per unit for every small pack. Poverty charges interest on nearly every purchase you make.
