LESSON 4 · Invisible Tricks Stores Use on You

When Points Win

Loyalty programs aren't always a trap. They work in your favor under specific conditions: you were going to buy the item anyway, you pay with a card you clear monthly, you redeem points right away instead of hoarding, and the program doesn't change where you shop. A 2% cash-back card with no annual fee, used on purchases you'd make regardless, is genuinely free money.

The key question: would you shop here and spend this much without the program? If yes, collect the rewards. If you've ever driven past a cheaper gas station to earn points at an expensive one, or bought a third item to hit a bonus threshold, the program owns you — not the other way around.
