LESSON 5 · Invisible Tricks Stores Use on You
The 24-Hour Rule
The single best defense against manufactured urgency is simple: wait 24 hours. Any purchase over $50 gets a mandatory cooling-off period. No exceptions. If the deal vanishes in 24 hours, it wasn't a deal — it was a trap. Real value doesn't expire overnight.
Beyond waiting, use price-tracking tools like CamelCamelCamel to see actual price history. Once you can see that a "limited sale" price is really the normal price, the urgency dissolves. Studies estimate the average household spends anywhere from hundreds to a few thousand dollars a year on unplanned buys — and most of that is exactly what a cooling-off period helps you skip.
