LESSON 2 · Your Brain on Money
When DIY Hurts
The IKEA Effect has a dark side. You might pour hours into a bad investment, a failing side project, or a DIY home renovation — and refuse to walk away because you built it. Entrepreneurs are especially vulnerable: many stay in unprofitable businesses too long because their effort feels too valuable to abandon.

This overlaps with the sunk cost fallacy but adds an emotional layer. It's not just about money spent — it's about identity. "I made this" quietly becomes "I am this." The antidote is simple but uncomfortable: regularly ask an outsider to evaluate your work.
