LESSON 2 · Escape the Debt Trap

Three to Six Months

Once debt is under control, build your full emergency fund: 3-6 months of essential expenses. Not income — expenses. If your monthly needs (rent, food, insurance, transport, minimum debt payments) total $2,500, you're aiming for $7,500 to $15,000. Single income? Lean toward six months. Dual income with stable jobs? Three months may be enough.

This fund buys you time. Job loss, a medical emergency, a family crisis — these are stressful enough without the added panic of "how do I pay rent?" An emergency fund turns a catastrophe into an inconvenience: it lets you decide from a place of security, not desperation.
