LESSON 3 · Escape the Debt Trap
Refinancing Power
Refinancing means replacing an existing loan with a new one at a lower interest rate. It works for mortgages, car loans, student loans, and personal loans. Even a 1% drop on a $200,000 mortgage saves roughly $40,000 over the life of the loan. That's real, life-changing money from a few hours of paperwork.

When does refinancing make sense? Two rules of thumb: refinance if you can lower your rate by at least 0.75-1%, and if you plan to keep the loan long enough to recoup closing costs. Refinancing a mortgage typically costs $2,000-$5,000 in fees, so you need to stay past the point where your monthly savings cover that cost.
