LESSON 3 · Smart Money Habits That Stick
Auto-Transfer Savings
Set up an automatic transfer from checking to savings on every payday. This is pay-yourself-first in action. The transfer should hit the same day your paycheck deposits — before you can see the full balance and feel "rich." Start with 10% of take-home pay if possible; otherwise start with any fixed amount and increase quarterly.

Use a separate bank for savings if you can. The small hassle of transferring money back creates just enough friction to prevent casual withdrawals. Your checking account becomes your "spending" account with a naturally lower balance, and your savings grow in the background without you noticing.
