Europeans thought black swans were impossible — until they found them in Australia
For centuries "a black swan" was a European figure of speech for something that could not exist, since every swan they knew was white. Then in 1697 Dutch explorers sailed up a river in Western Australia and found it full of black swans. Taleb borrowed the image: the events we are surest cannot happen are exactly the ones that blindside us.
