What a Counteroffer Really Measures
A counteroffer is a retention decision, not a recognition decision. Your manager weighs the cost of replacing you against the number needed to keep you. A competitor's offer just made that math visible on paper.

The best counteroffers adjust three things at once: money, scope, and written commitment. A pure salary bump with no change to scope or paperwork signals short-term retention — the root problem is still there.
