Why Microscopes Backfire

When feedback feels like an examination, people get defensive — and learning shuts down. The microscope mindset zooms in, names flaws, and assigns motive. The mirror mindset reflects what you saw and asks what they noticed. That keeps the conversation usable.

Detailed criticism can make people defensive. Keep it broad enough to be received, specific enough to be useful. The sweet spot is one sentence that names the behavior, without adjectives describing the person.
