LESSON 5 · The Feedback Playbook

The 24-Hour Rule

When you hear hard feedback about yourself, do not respond in the same conversation. Wait 24 hours. Strong emotion in the moment makes it harder to weigh feedback fairly; time lets the first reaction cool so you can assess the substance.

In the moment, your job is simple: listen, ask one clarifying question, say thank you, and stop. Do not explain. Do not defend. Do not promise a transformation while you are still processing.

The next day, reread your notes and ask: "What part of this is true, even if it was delivered badly?" That question turns pain into usable data. Leadership maturity often begins here.
