LESSON 5 · The Freelance Leap

The Side Hustle Contract

You signed an employment agreement, and its rules matter. Many contracts allow outside work, but only within limits: no competition, no company resources, no client lists, no work during paid hours, and sometimes required disclosure.

Before your first paid client, check three clauses: non-compete or outside-work limits, IP assignment (who owns what you build after hours), and moonlighting disclosure (must you notify HR). Do not rely on the vibe of the workplace; the clause is what matters if a dispute starts. If any answer is ambiguous, resolve it before you start. A clear answer before the first invoice is cheaper than a dispute after it.
