LESSON 5 · The Freelance Leap

The Day-Job Rules

Three operating rules protect your day job: keep separate devices or accounts, block client work outside working hours, and check conflicts before accepting a project. One invoice is not worth giving your employer a clean reason to fire you; clean boundaries make the side business safer.

If your contract asks you to disclose outside work, put it in writing. A two-line HR email — "I freelance on weekends" — creates a timestamped paper trail. That record matters if a future manager tries to frame your side work as something you hid.
