LESSON 5 · Build a Reputation That Precedes You
Protecting the System
Reputation takes years to build and one breach to crack. Protect it with absolute consistency between your public face and private behavior, because trust leaks through the gap.
Avoid gossip. Honor confidences. Admit mistakes quickly. Never trade ethics for a short-term win. Also watch smaller cracks: missed follow-ups, vague promises, defensive replies, and credit you accept too easily. Small repairs made early are cheaper than public damage control later. Once a quarter, compare the reputation you have with the one you want, then adjust one behavior that would close the gap. The system stays healthy when you maintain it before a crisis forces the repair.
