Match, Don't Exceed

Most people think openness means going first. The real rule is the opposite: go second, and match the other person's vulnerability without exceeding it.

When they share a small frustration, return a small one, not a confession. When they share a real challenge, you can match it. Going further than they did makes them uncomfortable; under-matching keeps things shallow. Mirroring builds trust without burning it.

The exception: when someone is circling something they cannot name, sharing a small version of your own struggle gives them permission. That is not going first — it is meeting the moment they were already trying to reach.
