Wired for Reputation

The reason runs deep. For most of human history, your reputation was survival gear. Being seen as unreliable risked exclusion from the group that fed and protected you, so social expectations can still influence follow-through.

But a one-time goal announcement to strangers online is not a reliable magic switch, and some research suggests it can even backfire for identity goals. Accountability works best when it is structured: concrete commitments, repeated check-ins, and visible progress rather than a single public declaration.
