LESSON 3 · Manage Energy, Not Time

Detach Completely

During a break, leave the work behind. No checking email "just quickly," no turning the problem over in your head. Research on psychological detachment by Sabine Sonnentag shows that people who fully unplug come back with more energy and creativity than those who stay half-connected.

Letting go feels wrong mid-problem, but your mind keeps working in the background through a process called incubation. That's why so many breakthroughs arrive in the shower or on a walk, not at the desk. A break isn't a pause in your work; it's a different phase of it.
