LESSON 1 · First Impressions That Last
The Halo Effect in Action
Once someone decides you seem competent, a halo effect can kick in. They may give unrelated traits the benefit of the doubt - assuming you are more reliable, likable, or thoughtful than the evidence has proved yet.

The reverse can matter too. A weak first read triggers the horn effect, where neutral behaviors get interpreted negatively. A quiet pause may read as uncertainty. A glance away may read as evasive. The filter does not wait for much new evidence; it starts rereading cues to fit the first verdict.
