LESSON 2 · Speak Without Fear
The Competence-Confidence Loop
Most people wait to feel confident before they act. This is backwards. Confidence comes from demonstrated competence — you act first, then confidence follows. That creates a loop: practice builds competence, competence builds confidence, and confidence makes you practice more willingly.
The hardest part is starting when you have none of the three. The fix is to start so small that failure is almost impossible:
- Ask one question in your next meeting
- Toast a friend at dinner
- Introduce yourself to someone new
