LESSON 2 · Storytelling That Captivates

Comedy's Backbone

In comedy, the Rule of Three is the backbone of every joke. The first item sets a pattern. The second confirms it. The third breaks it with a surprise. "I need three things: food, shelter, and a WiFi password." The laugh sits in the third slot every time.

Stand-up comedians rely on this instinctively. The setup builds expectation through two items, then the punchline subverts it on the third. Our brains are prediction machines — when item three zigs instead of zagging, the surprise triggers a genuine laugh.
