Negotiation Framework

Ethical persuasion follows five steps:

  • Prepare: research the other side's interests, constraints, and alternatives before the conversation starts
  • Listen first: spend the first third of any negotiation asking questions and genuinely understanding
  • Expand options: brainstorm creative solutions that address both sides' core interests
  • Trade strategically: give on items you value less to gain on items you value more
  • Commit clearly: document agreements specifically so both sides share the same expectations.
