Reading faces starts with baseline. Learn someone's normal expression, animation, and eye movement first; deviations from that pattern are where useful signals appear.

A fake smile may involve the mouth more than the eyes, but real life is messy: polite smiles, tired smiles, and cultural display rules all complicate the read. Look for patterns, not single tells.
