LESSON 1 · The Feedback Loop

Direct Without Destructive

Directness and compassion are not opposites — they are partners. The compassion balance means being honest about the problem while being generous about the person. "Your presentation skills need work" is direct but vague. "Your data was strong, and the delivery rushed past the key findings — slowing down would let that great analysis land" is direct, specific, and acknowledges effort.

  • Separate the behavior from the person
  • Lead with something genuinely observed, never manufactured praise
  • Use "and" instead of "but" to connect strengths to growth areas
  • End with a specific, actionable step, not a vague request to "improve"
