Qualifier Overload
Truthful people state facts plainly. Liars hedge excessively. "To be honest..." implies other statements were not. "Frankly..." signals that candor takes special effort. "As far as I know..." creates an escape hatch for later denial.
Other common hedges include "I swear" — over-stressing your honesty suggests you expect to be doubted — and "to the best of my recollection," which excuses future inconsistencies in advance. One qualifier is normal. A cluster of qualifiers in a single answer is a verbal alarm, a sign the speaker is working harder than necessary to be believed.
