Let Them Save Face

People lie hardest when the truth threatens their identity or dignity. Offering a graceful path to honesty can increase disclosure because the person no longer has to choose between truth and humiliation.

When someone is being deceptive, their emotional tone may mismatch their words. They may describe a major event flatly or a neutral topic with visible anxiety. The gap is a clue to explore, not proof of a lie.
