LESSON 1 · Handle Tough Questions

Buying Time Intelligently

You do not need to answer instantly. Skilled communicators buy processing time without appearing evasive:

  • Repeat the question: "That's a great question — you're asking about our Q4 strategy?"
  • Clarify scope: "Are you asking about the short-term or long-term impact?"
  • Take a breath: A deliberate two-second pause reads as thoughtful, not stalling
  • Bridge from something known: "That connects to something we discussed last week..."

Each technique gives you 5-15 seconds of processing time while appearing engaged and professional. The audience never notices because you look like you are being thorough.
