LESSON 1 · Recover When You Lose Them

The Eye Contact Test

The fastest diagnostic is direct eye contact scanning. Look at five different people in your audience. If several do not return your gaze within two seconds, attention may have drifted. Engaged listeners often give some sign of tracking you — eye contact, a nod, or a quick response — but context and culture matter.

When you are energetic and your audience is flat, there is a dangerous energy mismatch. Pushing harder usually makes it worse. When you are animated and they mirror you — nodding, leaning forward, murmuring — you have alignment. Match first, lead second.
