When Stories Backfire

Stories fail when they are too long, irrelevant, or self-aggrandizing. A five-minute story to recapture a disengaged audience just gives them more time to mentally leave. A story that does not connect to your content feels like procrastination with a plot.

Rehearse the physical moment of pivoting from content to story. Step away from the podium. Change your posture. Lower your voice. Make eye contact with a specific person. These physical shifts signal "something different is happening" before your words do.
