Conversation Starters That Work

Drop "So, what do you do?" It puts people on the spot and triggers a robotic job-title answer. Try these instead:

• "What brought you here today?" — opens a story, not a title
• "Have you been to one of these before?" — builds instant common ground
• "I'm [name]. I don't know many people here yet." — honesty disarms
• "What are you working on that excites you?" — people light up about passion projects

None of these need fancy vocabulary. The power is the real curiosity behind them. After your opener, listen more than you talk, and ask one follow-up question.
