LESSON 4 · Confidence in Every Word

The Recovery Toolkit

Smooth ways to fix a mistake without derailing the conversation:

  • "Sorry, what I meant was..." — simple and works everywhere
  • "Let me rephrase that." — signals confidence, not weakness
  • "Actually, the word I'm looking for is..." — shows self-correction
  • Quick fix with no comment — just say the right word and keep going
  • Light humor — "Well, that's not the word I wanted," with a smile

The key is to correct and move on. Do not dwell. Do not apologize three times. Fix it and go. Native speakers self-correct constantly: "I went to — well, I drove to the store."
