Prepositions Worth Memorizing
Some verbs and adjectives insist on specific prepositions with no logical reason:
- Depend on (not depend of)
- Interested in (not interested about)
- Good at (not good in)
- Listen to (not listen at)
- Responsible for (not responsible of)
These are called dependent prepositions, and every language has them. The most efficient approach is to learn the verb and its preposition as a single unit.
When you encounter a new verb, always check: what preposition does it take? Write them together in your notes: "apply FOR a job," "apologize TO someone FOR something," "congratulate someone ON something." Treating verb plus preposition as one chunk prevents errors far better than learning them separately.
