LESSON 3 · Everyday Expressions & Idioms

Slang That Needs Caution

Some slang is context-dependent and can backfire. "Dude" is friendly in California but can sound odd in a British office. "Lit" and "fire" work among younger speakers but may confuse older ones.

The biggest danger is outdated slang. Using expressions that have clearly aged out — like "YOLO" or "on fleek" — marks you as someone who learned from old sources. If you are unsure whether a slang word is current, check whether people still use it on social media.
