LESSON 5 · Everyday Expressions & Idioms

Digital Tone Reading

Reading tone in written messages is a critical modern skill. A period at the end of a text can feel aggressive to younger speakers. "Fine." means something very different from "Fine!" or "Fine :)"

Short sentences in an email often mean the writer is busy or annoyed. Exclamation marks signal friendliness: "Thanks!" is warm, "Thanks." is neutral, and no thanks at all might mean frustration. Emoji are their own minefield. In some workplaces a thumbs-up is a normal reply; in others it reads as childish or even passive-aggressive. Watch what your colleagues and managers use before adopting emoji yourself.
