LESSON 3 · Travel English Survival Kit

The Restaurant Script

Restaurants in English-speaking countries follow a predictable rhythm. You walk in, get seated, receive menus, order drinks, order food, eat, and pay. At each stage there is a small script both sides follow.

The server will usually start with "Hi, can I get you something to drink?" or "Are you ready to order?" Your job is to respond with clear, simple choices. "I'll have the..." is a natural way to order. Not "I want" (too blunt) and not "May I please have" (too formal for most places).
