LESSON 3 · Travel English Survival Kit
Dietary Needs and Allergies
Communicating food restrictions in English can literally save your life, so don't be shy or vague. "I have a severe nut allergy" is clear and urgent; "I'm kind of allergic to nuts" might not be taken seriously enough. Learn these phrases: "Does this contain..." followed by your allergen, "Is this dish gluten-free?" and "Can this be made without dairy?" If the server seems unsure, ask to speak with the chef.
For preferences rather than allergies, be straightforward: "I'm vegetarian" or "I don't eat pork." Most English-speaking restaurants are used to these requests, and adding "please" and a smile goes a long way.
