LESSON 2 · Write It Right

Softening a Request

Small hedge words turn a blunt request into a warm one, with no change to what you actually need:

  • "Just" shrinks the ask: "I just need the file" feels lighter than "I need the file."
  • "When you get a chance" removes pressure and signals you respect their time.
  • "I was wondering if" makes a question feel optional rather than demanding.
  • "Would you mind" hands the other person the choice instead of an order.

The trap is overdoing it. Stack too many hedges and your message gets vague, so the reader can't tell what you actually want. Soften the tone, but keep the request clear.
