Reading the Room
Formal English is not a fixed rulebook you memorize. It is a dial you adjust to fit the person in front of you.

Watch how the other person speaks and meet them at that level. If they use contractions, you use contractions. If they crack a joke, you can loosen up too.
Think of it as following their lead on a dance floor. You are not setting the tempo; you are matching it.
