Vowel Sounds That Matter

English has around 15 vowel sounds, compared with 5 in Spanish or Italian. That gap is why vowels cause the most accent confusion. You don't need to master all 15 — focus on the pairs that change meaning. "Ship" vs "sheep" uses two different "i" sounds: the short one (ship) is quick and relaxed, the long one (sheep) stretches your lips into a smile. Mix them up and "I want to live" can sound like "I want to leave." The schwa (uh) is the most common vowel sound in English, yet it's rarely taught.
