LESSON 3 · Pronunciation Breakthrough

The Disappearing Sounds

Native speakers routinely drop whole sounds to speak more efficiently, a process called elision. "Comfortable" becomes "comf-ter-ble," and "Wednesday" loses its "d" completely.

Understanding these reductions transforms your listening. "Gonna" is "going to," "wanna" is "want to," and "gotta" is "got to." Once you recognize these common reductions, fast native speech that seemed impossible suddenly becomes clear. With practice, spotting them turns into second nature.
