Training Your Ear

The fastest way to decode connected speech is to practice backwards. Instead of trying to catch fast speech and chop it into words, start with slow speech and speed it up.

Dictation exercises work well. Play five seconds of natural English speech, write what you hear, then check the transcript. The gaps between what you heard and what was actually said reveal exactly which connected speech patterns you are missing — and that gap is your study list.
