LESSON 3 · Voice Care Essentials

Keep the Air Moist

Dry air pulls moisture straight out of your vocal folds, so the air around you matters as much as what you drink. In winter, heated indoor air is especially harsh, and overnight breathing through your mouth can leave your voice rough by morning.

A few easy fixes:

  • Run a humidifier in the room where you sleep or work to keep indoor air comfortably moist
  • Breathe through your nose when you can, since it warms and humidifies air before it reaches your throat
  • Limit dehydrating environments — long stretches in air conditioning, on planes, or near heaters all dry the tissue.
