Replacing Filler Words

The most impactful use of the strategic pause is replacing filler words — "um," "uh," "like," "you know," and "so." These verbal crutches fill silence because the speaker is uncomfortable with the gap. But listeners hear them as uncertainty.

The technique is simple but requires practice: when you feel the urge to say "um," close your mouth instead. The silence that follows is not awkward to the audience. It sounds deliberate, thoughtful, and authoritative.
