LESSON 3 · Command Any Room

Building Pause Mastery

Develop comfort with silence through progressive practice:

  • Count silently — after making a point, count to two in your head before continuing. This builds pause tolerance.
  • Record and timestamp — record a presentation and note where you use fillers. Re-record, replacing each filler with silence.
  • Practice with a partner — have someone raise a hand whenever you use a filler word. The awareness alone reduces frequency.
  • Study the masters — watch speeches by accomplished speakers. Note how silence creates drama, emphasis, and authority.
  • Embrace the discomfort — pausing will feel wrong at first. Push through it.
