LESSON 1 · The Emotional Voice

Vocal Leakage and Deception

Your voice leaks emotion even when you try to hide it. This phenomenon, called vocal leakage, makes the voice the least controllable communication channel. People can manage their words and even their faces, but the micro-tremors, pitch shifts, and timing changes that stress creates in vocal production are far harder to govern. The face has dozens of muscles you can consciously pose; the larynx, breath, and resonance respond to your nervous system in real time, faster than deliberate control can catch up. That lag is why a steady face can sit on top of a shaky voice.
