Using Vocal Awareness

Leverage your understanding of vocal emotional signals:

  • Self-monitoring — record yourself in different emotional states. Learn what your voice does when you are anxious, excited, or tired
  • Manage the source, not the symptom — instead of trying to sound confident, work on actually building confidence. The voice follows the emotion
  • Listen to others' voices — pay attention to pitch, pace, and energy changes in conversation. The voice often tells a different story than the words
  • Practice congruence — align what you say with how you feel about saying it
