LESSON 3 · Paradoxes That Break Your Brain

Vagueness is Everywhere

The Sorites paradox is not just about sand. It infects every category with blurred edges:

  • Legal age limits — at exactly midnight on your 18th birthday you can suddenly vote, but nothing changed in your brain
  • Poverty lines — earning $1 above the threshold makes you "not poor" by definition
  • Baldness — losing one hair does not make you bald, yet enough losses do
  • Color boundaries — where does red end and orange begin on the spectrum?

Every gradual change resists sharp classification, and most real-world changes are gradual.
