Escaping the sunk cost fallacy requires a mental reset. Try these techniques:

  • Ask the clean slate question: if I were starting from scratch today with no prior investment, would I choose this?
  • Separate decisions from investments — the money is gone; only future outcomes matter
  • Practice pre-commitment — set conditions in advance that trigger abandonment
  • Watch for emotional accounting — guilt about waste is not the same as rational analysis
  • Remember that quitting smart is a skill, not a character flaw

The hardest part is accepting that sometimes the bravest financial decision is to walk away and let the sunk costs stay sunk.
