Spotting It Online

Before you join a pile-on, do one thing: find the original. If a screenshot or quote-tweet only shows you the outraged reply, you are seeing the scarecrow, not the source.

Ask yourself: would the original author agree this is what they meant? If the answer is clearly no, the argument in front of you was built to be knocked down — and reacting to it only helps it travel.
