You can apply inference to the best explanation to everyday mysteries:

  • When something goes wrong, list all possible explanations before settling on one
  • Rank them by scope, simplicity, consistency, and testability
  • Check the winner against all available evidence, not just the evidence that prompted your search
  • Ask: "Does this explanation make the evidence expected, or merely possible?"
  • Remember that the best current explanation is provisional — new evidence can dethrone it.
