You can apply inference to the best explanation to everyday mysteries:
- When something goes wrong, list all possible explanations before settling on one
- Rank them by scope, simplicity, consistency, and testability
- Check the winner against all available evidence, not just the evidence that prompted your search
- Ask: "Does this explanation make the evidence expected, or merely possible?"
- Remember that the best current explanation is provisional — new evidence can dethrone it.
