LESSON 1 · Stay Sharp Under Pressure

Your Disagreement Toolkit

Master productive disagreement with these practices:

  • Pause before responding — a three-second beat prevents reactive words you cannot take back
  • Use "I" language — "I see it differently" keeps it about your view, not a verdict on theirs
  • Know your goal — are you trying to find truth, persuade, or just win? Only the first two are worth the conflict
  • Stay open — if you enter a disagreement unable to be convinced, you are not disagreeing, you are performing

The best disagreements end with both people understanding something they did not before. That only happens when both sides prioritize learning over winning.
